The J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding

FULBRIGHT ASSOCIATION CALLS FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2010
J. WILLIAM FULBRIGHT PRIZE FOR INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING

Association Seeks Candidates from Diverse Fields for Prestigious Award

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Fulbright Association is accepting nominations for the 2010 J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding, a $50,000 cash award to an individual, group, or organization that has made outstanding contributions to bringing peoples, cultures, and nations to greater understanding of others.  Four recipients of the Fulbright Prize—Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Kofi Annan, and Martti Ahtisaari—have later been named Nobel Peace Prize laureates.

Nominations are open to the public.  Individuals, groups, or organizations in any field may be nominated.  Achievements that promote international understanding through the arts and humanities, the sciences, community development, NGOs, and business, among other fields, as well those in politics, diplomacy, or international relations, will be considered.  Nominations will be accepted through the Fulbright Association website at http://www.fulbright.org/prize/nomination.htm through January 31, 2010.

The Fulbright Association Board of Directors convenes an international Selection Committee to choose the Prize recipient.  Its members’ identities remain confidential until the laureate is announced.  The Fulbright Prize laureate will present an address about his or her work and aspirations at the 2010 Fulbright Prize ceremony.

The J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding honors the Fulbright Program, the largest and most significant educational exchange program in history, as well as the career and spirit of its creator, the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. The Fulbright Association is a private, non-profit organization of current and former Fulbright grant recipients who support and promote the Fulbright Program.  There are now approximately 300,000 Fulbright alumni throughout the world.
