ABOUT THE CHAPTER
The Hawai'i Chapter of the Fulbright Association was organized in the fall of 1985, in no small part due to encouragement and assistance from Arthur Dudden, the founding president of the national Fulbright Association. It has maintained a membership of some fifty former Fulbrighters over the years, mostly individuals associated with the University of Hawai'i but including others affiliated with Hawai'i Pacific University and Brigham Young University-Hawai'i. Still others with different connections--particularly private high schools, the East-West Center, and former Fulbright scholars and staffers retired in Hawai'i--also have been active.
Like most chapters, the Hawai'i Chapter's activities center on providing support for Fulbrighters in the area and serving as an advocate for the Fulbright Program. Aided by a series of "enrichment grants" from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department, a variety of excursions to neighboring islands, visits to museums and cultural events, briefings by Pacific military leaders, and attendance at varied social events have been arranged for visiting Fulbright grantees over the years. With regards to advocacy, there has been an on-going effort to promote international exchange generally and the Fulbright Program in particular through different forums, usually at the University of Hawai'i. In addition, in 1990 the chapter hosted the 13th annual meeting of the Fulbright Association, an event attended by Senator and Mrs. Fulbright as well as some 200 former Fulbrighters from around the world.
CHAPTER PROGRAMS AND EVENTS
During the present academic year, the chapter staged a well-attended welcoming reception for the five senior and ten junior grantees now working in Hawai'i and hosted them and their families at the recent World Invitational Hula Festival. Further social events as well as a forum promoting participation in the Fulbright program are planned for later in the year.
