Chapter Minutes

 CALENDAR OF EVENTS (2007-2008)

September 8 (Saturday)        Caldwell: Kolache Festival
We will travel by private cars to the nearby community of Caldwell to attend the 23rd annual Kolache Festival, which is devoted to a celebration of Czech culture. In addition to having an opportunity to sample the sights, sounds, and foods of this festival which is devoted to Czech culture, we will visit the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum and hear a lecture given by a faculty member from the Texas A&M University History Dept.

October 6 (Saturday)            Fredericksburg: "Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg"Beautiful Fredericksburg, in the heart of Texas' Hill Country, west of Austin, is a gem of German cultural heritage. Our Fulbright Assn. has chosen the day of its annual festival to make our inaugural visit to the town, which we will do via bus. Included in the day’s itinerary are visits to the Pioneer Museum Complex and the Vereins Kirche Museum.

November 10 (Saturday)      San Antonio: A Day in San Antonio

A chartered bus will provide transportation to San  Antonio (about 3 ? hours away), where we will visit the Institute of Texan Cultures and the Alamo, have a chance to shop at El Mercado (Mexican market square), eat at ethnic restaurants, and have time to stroll along the Riverwalk. In previous years some members of our group have taken the opportunity to catch a guided tour boat ride down the river!

December 21 (Friday evening) Bryan: Holiday Party

We will gather at the home of a local Fulbright Assn. member to celebrate the season and view an American home at Christmas time.

February 9 (Saturday)          Washington-on-the-Brazos: A Step back in Texas History

This community, located some 30 miles southeast of College Station, is home to the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park, located on the site where the constitution of the Republic of Texas was formulated. We will travel by private cars to the grounds of the “Birthplace of Texas” to visit the Star of the Republic Museum and living history farms, hear a lecture on early Texas from a historian, and enjoy a picnic lunch.

Mid-March (Saturday or Sunday) Houston: Livestock Show and Rodeo
This three-week event is a “must-see” for many in the Southwest. We plan to attend on the designated “Go Tejano Day” to experience Hispanic culture. A chartered bus will transport us to and from the Reliant Stadium in Houston (about 100 miles south of here). In addition to the rodeo and music performances, there is a carnival (kids welcome!) and lots more to experience.

April 4 (Saturday evening)   College Station: International Cuisines of the Brazos Valley Dinner

The chapter will host its fourth annual dinner featuring foods representing the various ethnic groups that have settled in the Brazos Valley, featuring such treats as German and Czech sausages, Mexican fajitas, Italian calzones, Czech kolaches, and Cajun beignets, as well as dishes

Fulbright students attending TAMU

A discussion ensued concerning how to further integrate into our activities the students currently attending TAMU on Fulbright scholarships. They have been invited to all of our chapter meetings and activities, but it was felt that a more personal invitation would prove effective in eliciting their participation. A motion was passed that directs our chapter to pay a Fulbright Association membership for the president of the student group, and then have the incumbent of that position be a voting member of the chapter board.
