A Letter from the Greater New York Chapter
September 27, 2007
Re: Greater New York Chapter Board Nominations and Elections
Dear fellow Fulbright Association members:
This is an exciting moment to be an active member of our chapter! We are reaching out to the entire Fulbright community in the area, including current visiting scholars, students and exchange teachers, as well as alumni and friends of the Fulbright Program. In recent months, we have partnered with the Institute of International Education to host visiting Fulbrighters in our homes; participated in a New York State reception and enrichment event for visiting Fulbrighters hosted by the Eastern New York Chapter; learned to salsa with fellow alumni; produced our second newsletter showcasing Fulbright returnees; continued the longstanding summer writing workshop relationship with Sarah Lawrence University and local schools; and hosted, with Metro International, a send-off for departing Fulbright grantees from our area.
For a glimpse of potential future initiatives, read the notes from our December 3 conference, where forty some Chapter members helped to identify "Our Future Pathways," available online at http://www.fulbright.org/NY-Greater/ourfuturepathways.pdf.
At this time, we would like to invite your enthusiastic participation in the 2007 Greater New York Chapter (GNYC) Board elections. Following the excellent precedent set by the National Capital Area Chapter, we ask that you please follow the instructions below.
General Information There are five open positions on the Board for which we are now soliciting nominations or self-nominations. One position is reserved for a practicing attorney. The Nominating Committee will present a slate of Nominees for election by the GNYC Membership.
Board Duties Members of the Board of Directors commit to attending regular Board meetings of the GNYC (approximately five per year). Meetings are currently scheduled for 6:00-8:00pm on the second Wednesday of October, December, February and May, as well as one meeting in August. The Board supervises chapter policies and actively participates in planning and executing chapter programs. The term is for two years, and a Board member may run for re-election. All Board members should be prepared to dedicate several hours per week to Fulbright activities, to take the lead in organizing one GNYC event during each year, and to participate in a reasonable number of other chapter activities. Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a member in good standing of the Fulbright Association and reside in the geographic area of the Greater New York Chapter.
Nomination Process
- Any member may self-nominate or nominate another eligible chapter member with that member's permission.
- Nominees must submit the following elements:
1. brief biography, including Fulbright year and country, current position and any other relevant experience; 2. statement of no more than 300 words as to what the nominee thinks are priorities for the GNYC and what s/he can contribute by serving as a Board member. Please make reference to the priorities proposed at the December 3, 2006 session, selecting one or two areas and describing your interest.
- Please send your nominations by October 8 to the Nominating Committee at greaterny@fulbright.org.
Voting Procedures In order to save postal costs and to streamline the election process, this year's voting will be done almost entirely online.
If you prefer to have a paper ballot, we will be happy to mail you one as long as you make your request by contacting the nominating committee in advance of the election at greaterny@fulbright.org.
Act now to send in your nominations! Accept our thanks in advance for your active participation and prompt responses!
Kind regards,
Caroline H. Vaughan, Ed.D. President Greater New York Chapter
Rosalba Del Vecchio, Ph.D. Vice President for Advocacy and Nominating Committee Member Greater New York Chapter
Elise van Oss Immediate Past President and Nominating Committee Member Greater New York Chapter
