Previous Annual Symposia and Holiday Brunches:
The Connecticut Chapter of the Fulbright Association held our annual Symposium and Holiday Brunch in New Haven at Yale University's Office of International Students and Scholars "OISS" (click here for location.)  Members of our regional Fulbright community (past, present and prospective) enjoyed meeting their fellow Fulbrighters, international scholars, alumni and members of the Connecticut Chapter of the Fulbright Association, a wonderful speaker, prizes, entertainment and refreshments!

Our 2007 Symposium Speaker was Pulitzer Prize winner Ms. Debbie Applegate, author of "The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher" (Doubleday, 2006). Now nearly forgotten, Henry Ward Beecher (1813?1887) was an immensely famous minister, abolitionist and public intellectual whose career was rocked by allegations of adultery that made nationwide headlines. Ms. Applegate places this curiously modern 19th-century figure at the focus of epochal developments in American culture. Beecher's mesmerizing speeches and fiery newspaper columns made him one of the first celebrities of the nascent mass media. Ms. Applegate is one of the most passionate and delightful speakers you will ever hear speak on the subject of American culture in the context of the biography of Henry Beecher Stowe.

Our 2006 distiguished guest speaker was Dr. Abbas Amanat, Professor of History and International and Area Studies, who spoke on "Iran and the Middle East." As a specialist in modern Iranian history and former Director of Yale's Middle East Council, Dr. Amanat's expertise was not only timely, but even ahead of the curve of current events. Dr. Amanat expertly linked historical and current persepctives into an informative, thought-provoking and a touch provocative discussion about Iran in the context of regional issues. The ensuing discussion truly was a Fulbright phenomenon!

We don't normally bribe our attendees, but as a cultural momento, several visiting Fulbrighters went home with gift CDs of American music (e.g. Gershwin, Copland, Berstein, Scott Joplin) and one lucky Fulbrighter went home with another truly American icon -- new iPod Nano!

All Visiting Scholars and Members of the Fulbright Community (past, current and prospective Fulbrighters) in Connecticut are welcome to our events.

Check back here for details on additional upcoming Connecticut activities.

In 2005, our guest speaker was Jonathan Spence, Yale University's Sterling Professor of History, spoke about "The Search for Modern China" following brunch and a social reception for visiting Fulbrighters, alumni and friends.

For photos of the event see the photo web site (and then click on the wreath photo; no need to sign in just to view the photos.)

Recognized as one of the foremost scholars of Chinese civilization from the 16th century to the present, Jonathan Spence has written extensively on the role of history in shaping modern China. His critically acclaimed The Search for Modern China has become one of the standard texts on the last several hundred years of Chinese history. His recent works include a biography of Mao Zedong and Treason by the Book, exploring an intriguing episode of 18th-century history.

All Fulbrighters and friends were invited to join us for this enlightening symposium and social event.

Our 2004 symposium's theme was The Iraq War: The Future of the Past.

Prof. Karen Pollinger Foster discusses the effects of the Iraq conflicts on regional antiquities and archeology.

The Board of Directors ponders a weighty issue.

Our Chapter is intended to address the community of Fulbrighters (past, present and future!) located in Connecticut. We welcome long-time associates, new friends and anyone curious about the Fulbright program and international issues. Please contact us (per below) and join our activities (on the Events Calendar). We welcome you!

At a meeting at Yale University in 1989, several individuals who had lectured or studied abroad under Fulbright fellowships, and with interests in promoting international educational and cultural exchange, founded the Connecticut Chapter of the Fulbright Association. Currently comprising more than one hundred members, the chapter sponsors an annual symposium and other educational and cultural projects to bring Fulbrighters from abroad who are working and studying in Connecticut to meet with their American counterparts.
